By the time someone calls, they've usually already decided. They searched, compared a couple of options, and picked whichever one looked like the safer bet — an updated website, a real Google Business Profile, a presence that said this business has its act together. Not necessarily the better business. Just the one that looked more established.

That's the part that's hard to watch: good businesses, doing genuinely good work, losing new customers to newer, weaker competitors — not on price, not on craft, but on who showed up first in a search and looked more legitimate doing it.

I watched this happen up close, to a local business I was close to — one that did great work and had loyal customers, and still kept losing new ones to competitors that simply had a stronger presence online. Nothing about the work was worse. The website was.
